Our DNA

Churches often emphasize different points of reference.  You would say that they have a kind of “genetic code” that identifies them.  The following topics are helpful in understanding the DNA of the Walnut Valley Vineyard Church.

The Word

“ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD BREATHED...” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16)

We believe that the Bible is inspired by God and our only infallible guide for faith and practice.  As a result, we will always teach from and evaluate all of our faith and practice in light of its authoritative teaching.  We are “people of the Word”.

The New Birth

"YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN...” (JOHN 3:7

We are unable to enter a relationship with Jesus until we are born again.  This happens when we make a decision to place our trust in Jesus.  He responds by raising our dead spirit to new life, indwelled by His Spirit and now fit for eternity with Him.

The Kingdom of God

“THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND...” (MARK 1:15)

Jesus presented the reality that God’s eternal future reign had come in His own person.  He not only preached the good news about the kingdom, but He demonstrated the reality of the Kingdom by the miracles He performed.  We are called to enter into His Kingdom by submitting our lives to Him and then becoming ministers of the Kingdom ourselves.

The Great Commandments

“LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD...LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR...”(MATTHEW 22:37-39)

Jesus summed the entire moral law taught in the Old Testament b saying that we are called to love God and love our neighbor.  Jesus expanded these commands to include that we are to love one another as He loved us.  Our goal is simply to grow in our ability to love God, one another, and the world around us.

The Great Commission

“GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS...” (MATTHEW 28:19)

Jesus’ purpose for the Church can be summed up be the Great Commission.  We are to take the message and ministry of Jesus to the world.  We do this, not only in our immediate families and neighborhoods, but to other cultural groups both near and far.

The Filling of the Holy Spirit

“BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT...”(EPHESIANS 5:18)

The Christian life is impossible to live in the power of our weak flesh.  We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, both for our character and for power to serve.  Every believer can receive the empowering presence of the Spirit and needs to experience it regularly.  We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Formation

“UNTIL CHRIST IS FORMED IN YOU...” (GALATIANS 4:19)

The transformation of our character is not instant and it is not an accident.  We must commit to it and we must exercise ourselves “unto Godliness”.  The spiritual disciplines are ways that we “exercise out bodies to open our hearts to the work of the Spirit” that have been practiced throughout the history of the Church.

Evangelism

“I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH...” (MATTHEW 16:18)

“LIKE LIVING STONES YOU ARE BEING BUILT INTO A SPIRITUAL HOUSE...” (I PETER 2:5

“WITH CHRIST JESUS HIMSELF AS THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE...” (EPHESIANS 2:20)

Jesus is committed to building His church, the only institution that He began.  We are called to build this local church, but also to work for building His universal church throughout the world.
